December 23 – 31, 2009
Each year around Christmas, KRETS shows various art projects in the window facing Kristianstadsgatan. This year we have invited district champions Caroline Andersson (Svärta) and Jenny Nordberg (Apokalyps Labotek), to work together on an installation. Welcome to peek into their geometric landscape, through a peephole in the otherwise sour milk-covered window.

Free admissionWith Sound of the Sun, Mats Björk tries to find a way to listen to the sun and at the same time investigate the boundary between instrument and phonogram. For the transformation of sunlight to sound, Mats Björk has built a note generator driven and controlled by solar cells. To render the attributes of a phonogram, these components have been given the shape of a conventional CD package.
The composition is driven by sunlight and by connecting the object to a pair of headphones, you will be able to listen to the piece without access to power or batteries. The note generator’s oscillations are carefully tuned so that when the cover’s lid is open and in clear daylight, it will render the powerful energy of the sun. The pitch is driven by the intensity of the sunlight, which makes the listener experience the notes’ interrelations and their connection to light. Through a more active interaction with the sun, or explorations of other kinds of light, the piece moves on to a more chaotic experimental phase, where the role as a passive listener slowly turns into that of a musician.
Sound of the Sun is released in an edition of 24 copies, which together represent The Sound of the Sun Orchestra. Saturday, December 19, these will be presented as an installation at KRETS. The copies will be for sale at komplott.com starting Monday, December 21.
Mats Björk is a sound artist with an active past in different constellations and styles, who nowadays works solo under the parole ‘free composition’. Sound of the Sun is the third release in Komplott’s Maginot series. The series started with Ronnie Sundin in 2008, through the project Very Friendly. The editions in the series are considered as sidetracks to traditional releases, with a purpose to present music in a way that differs from conventional publication forms.
During a period of the year when we lack of light, Komplott releases two sun-related titles. Aside from Mats Björk’s Sound of the Sun, they just released Ronnie Sundin’s LP Sunspots. This edition was released in 50 copies, all with handmade covers and labels. Sundin and Björk will perform one set each Saturday, December 19.

Free admissionCelebrate Lucia with Kalligrammofon at KRETS! Take the chance to do your Christmas shopping from the distro and enjoy some wintery refreshments to decent prices. This year’s last Kalligrammofon event at KRETS brings you some nice visitors from Gothenburg.
The pop-experimentalist Viktor Sjöberg has recently toured around the world as a member of Jens Lekman’s band. Now he is back on Swedish ground and has just released a new solo album inspired by classic American soft rock, a beer blog and the Kalligrammofon collaboration KSS-radio.
The jack-of-all-trades Johan Gustavsson returns to KRETS to perform as Tsukimono. Under this moniker, Gustavsson has curiously tested many of the experimental music’s different expressions. He has released numerous records throughout the years, most recently a new 7” on Kalligrammofon. Johan just did a magical performance at the NMFHU-festival in Stockholm, focusing on material from his albums Née and Heart Attack Money. We can expect something similar this time.

August 22 – 29, 2009
Opening reception Saturday, August 22 (18-21) with a production/presentation of new work by Katarina Nitsch & Beatrice Ehrström. Further opening hours: 16-18 (all days).“Ersta Konsthall was established in 2006, in a little nook. I declared myself director of the 3,75 square meters and started to produce exhibitions with Swedish and international artists. The small gallery grew with time, not size-wise, but in intensity. In 2007 I started to collaborate with two curators, Sofia Curman and Paola Zamora. Together, we initiated a sound archive. We decided to let anyone participate and received around 200 contributions. The sound archive has since then toured around to different institutions in Sweden and abroad. In each new place, the archive has been activated and expanded. Ersta Konsthall has moved out of the little nook and materialized itself in different contexts. I work alone with the project again, mainly exploring different exhibition formats and distribution forms.” – Linus Elmes, director of Ersta Konsthall
August 22 will shine a new light on Ersta Konsthall’s sound archive. The exhibition/presentation at KRETS will not only be its first public presentation in Malmö. It will also be donated to radiowy.se, who from this point will be the archive’s trustee. radiowy.se has previously published three sound pieces from the archive, selected by director Linus Elmes, but this time they will present the whole archive, containing hundreds of sound pieces, which will be on display for one week.
radiowy.se is a platform for production and distribution, mainly of radio plays and text-based sound art. The interest for communication, language and text is a focus for radiowy.se, who wants to act as a meeting point for literature, art and drama – moving freely between these fields and at the same time create a context where they can merge.
By acting as a channel for distribution and presentation, radiowy.se wants to enable and highlight artistic production and experimentations in an aesthetic field, which for a long time has lacked distribution forms in Sweden.

Co-founder of the publication press 28/6 (28/6 2008 – 28/6 2009), active in the editorial staff for the publication studios Arena and Audiatur Bokhandel. Currently based in Copenhagen. Graff often works conceptually and with post-productive methods. In the recent issue of OEI he remixed Edith Södergran.
Peder Alexis Olsson is a poet based in Malmö. In October 2008, he made his debut with the poetry collection Tändstickor on OEI editör. The book functions as a linkage/machine for alternating current/building plans/image projection montages. In Svenska Dagbladet, he was accused for being a pseudonym and in a book review in Göteborgs-Posten, to have “his brain twisted inside-out”. He has contributed to magazines such as Kritiker, OEI, papi, Pequod and Subaltern. He also participated in SMS-lyrik at Lunds konsthall, in the exhibition The Invisible Landscapes (2006), and with the work Mehr Licht on Signal’s performance evening Shadow Play (2008). He is also part of the text- and sound-disturbance group Tre advokater. He currently works on a poetry script about sound, America and Morton Feldman, from which he will read this evening.
Pär Thörn is a writer who also works with electronic music, performances and sometimes conceptual art. Earlier this year he released his sixth book, Tidsstudiemannen, and in the beginning of 2010 he will release yet another (on Natur & Kultur). At KRETS he will read from a manuscript that is still under construction. Idiocy, causality and colorit soy is a promise.

Free admissionKRETS & Do the Math give you another chance to watch movies never before shown in Sweden. This time we focus on the mythical American south and show Awake, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp (2006) by Matt and Erica Hinton and Dancing Outlaw (1991) by Jacob Young.
Awake, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp
It took seven years to finish the documentary Awake, My Soul, a movie that gives an unique insight in a rare form of a cappella music, called “Sacred Harp”. A traditional American form of choir song that builds upon an alternative set of notes called “Shape Notes”. The directors Matt and Erica Hinton brings us deep into Southern’s most rural parts and visit the churches and followers that keep this tradition alive.Dancing Outlaw
Jesco White likes to describe himself as one of the last big “mountain dancers” – a style somewhere between stepping and classic “clog dancing”. Jesco was taught the dance by his father, Donald Ray White, who was one of the most famous and respected folk dancers in West Virigina’s Boone County. When Donald was tragically murdered, Jesco literally filled his (clog-) shoes. But Jesco is a complex character and on the verge of schizophrenia. Aside from his dancing, he makes his living as an Elvis impersonator and has a reputation of being a real troublemaker with an eye for alcohol and drugs. -

Free admissionAn evening at KRETS with a bird theme. The evening will bring you three concerts in the sprit of feathered creatures – with Jasper TX, Ronnie Sundin and Anders Dahl – plus an exhibition with related images. The exhibition includes illustrations from Wolfgang Müller’s book and record Séance Vocibus Avium, a project which tries to re-create the sounds of eleven extinct bird species, released by Fang Bomb in 2008 – as well as an alter by Thomas Ekelund, artist and musician (Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words, Dead Violets, Teeth) from Gothenburg.
About the artists:
Jasper TX is Dag Rosenqvist, one of the most prominent and interesting artists within the dreamy and guitar-based drone scene, with a unique hint of pop. Jasper TX recently released his fifth acclaimed album, Singing Stones, on Fang Bomb.
Ronnie Sundin is a Malmö-based musician, illustrator and artist. His carrier started in the early 90s, in the aftermath of industrial music – back then as noise musician under the moniker Bad Kharma, often in collaboration with Lasse Marhaug. Soon his focus shifted towards more quite domains and in 2002 the fanzine Fat Bankroll appointed him “Sweden’s most quiet man”. Now, after several low-keyed years, he has found his way back to noise music, which is proved by the album Seven Year Silence, released by Fang Bomb. Earlier this year, the first issue of Sundin’s Very Friendly – a cartoon magazine filled with stories about his own musical history as well as the history of electronic music in general – was released by Komplott.Anders Dahl shares his name with one of Linnés more prominent students, lives on a farm in Skårve, runs the label Bombax Bombax and was given the Manifest Award in 2008 for his record Doorbells (in the category art music/experimental). The jury’s motivation was: “With music that gets its oxygen from the nature, from the organic, from the tiny stories, from the analog world, small movements are created that develop into a powerful and rich musical weave. Here, the spontaneous meets the carefully articulated, and here tradition meets innovation”.

Admission: 20 SEKRING SNUTEN!
Kalmar-born Patrik Lindgren (Hormones in Abundance, Kissing Mirrors, etc.) impressed Kalligrammofon with his project Ring Snuten! several years ago. “Naked, undemanding. Simple songs. Nothing strange” is Patrik’s motto. A couple of years ago, Kalligrammofon and Structures Sonores introduced Patrik to musicians from bands like Testbild!, Auton and Piotr, for a recording session. The previous electronically oriented arrangements thereby had to give space to a more organic and jazzy sound. This evening’s concert will be performed in this new style, when Patrik gets on stage with Petter Samuelsson.
POSITIV
Positiv scans the present times with witty, naivistic texts. The music is an affected mixture of folk pop and lo-fi, touching upon influences ranging from Philemon Arthur & the Dung to Ariel Pink.

They did so with their fists and were both celebrated and hooted at. Hear uncovered stories about the first American female wrestlers and their fights both inside and outside of the ring. A fight that shaped the future for forthcoming generations of female athletes. Free admissionLa Antena (2007) by Esteban Sapir:
“The city without voice” is ruled with an iron fist by media mogul Mr TV, who is in total control of all spoken word and images, and who forces everyone to eat his own brand of TV-food. Mr TV is a monopolist, a personalization of totalitarism. He and his underlings secretly work on a hypnosis machine, which will enable them to reach their ultimate goal; to overtake control over the citizens’ senses through broadcasting. To achieve this goal, he has kidnapped the charismatic singer La Voz, the only citizen who still has her voice left. But a former employee at the channel witnesses the kidnapping, and together with his daughter he decides to put an end to Mr TV’s vicious plans. La Antena is a modern and stylistic silent movie pastiche with fairytale elements, always on the border of the naïve. Its lust for experimentation sparkles as it moves further away from traditional forms of movie making. There are clear hints to German expressionists such as Fritz Lang and Friedrich Murnau, mixed with a large dose of modern fantasy and movies from e.g. Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Car. Visually, La Antena is a never-ending feast for the eye and mind, but it is its unrestrained and innovative play with typography that makes it stand out from others. And quite a lot! -

Free admissionradiowy.se – a web-based platform for radio plays and text-based sound art – has invited Claes Neuefeind and Daniel Beskos from the German publication studio Mairisch Verlag, to hold a presentation and discussion about German independent radio play and radio theater. The radio play in Germany has a long and interesting history, that started as early as under the Weimar Republic, saw a veritable revolution in the 60s, and that now, aside from sections for radio plays on almost all public radio channels, also hold a lively scene for independent radio play producers.
Hamburger-based Mairisch Verlag has, except from their role as one of the most interesting contemporary publishers of young German writers, also published numerous radio plays, among them the two anthologies pressplay and pressplay2, both with Claes Neuefeind as editor. At KRETS, Neuefeind and Beskos will present, play examples from and discuss the anthologies as well as other Mairisch publications – and German independent radio plays in general.
The presentation will be held in English.

Free admissionSunday, April 26 (15.00), Bo Cavefors, Pär Thörn and Ola Ståhl will hold a discussion about the new RAF book, raf: stadsgerilla. What was the political situation like in the separated Germany during the 60s and 70s? What premises did the current power politics set for a radical opposition movement like RAF? What was the public opinion about Meinhof, Baader and the other RAF members? What differs the first generation of RAF members from the later “generations”? Would the methods and drives behind the RAF activities be conceivable in today’s Europe, with its growing gaps between social classes and with its extending poverty?
Cavefors, Thörn and Ståhl will also discuss the publisher’s initial release of raf:texter in Swedish and German. What consequences did this have for the publisher? How were the texts received by the press, the politicians and by left-wing groups? Why did Cavefors release these books?

Regardless if it has been with drone, noise or laptop collages, the music has always been warm and soulful.
Stockholm-based musician Martin Herterich makes his debut on Kalligrammofon with highly personal recordings on a limited CD-R. Herterich’s music often circulates around classic ambient. It is beautiful, repetitive and minimalistic. To celebrate these two releases we invite you to a party!

January 9 – 11, 2009
Time: 19-23 (Friday), 13-17 (Saturday) & 14-17 (Sunday)
Free admissionThree days in January, KRETS arranges a festival with focus on documentary- and art film. We will present Swedish as well as international films, together with guest-appearances by Curare Art Movement and the artist Erik Bünger, who will show and discuss their work.
By focusing on and overlapping these seemingly opposite disciplines, we want to explore and open up for a discussion about the fields in between fact and fiction and reality and art, as well as our notions of these dichotomies.
The festival is free of charge and supported by the Culture Department of Malmö and Folkuniversitetet. See program below.
Thanks to Sandra Juto, who designed the festival poster.
